Pakistan has approved dual citizenship for its nationals residing in Germany, allowing them to acquire German nationality without relinquishing their Pakistani citizenship. The decision marks a significant policy shift aimed at addressing long-standing legal and social concerns faced by overseas Pakistanis living in Europe.
Under the updated framework, dual citizenship with Germany is now formally recognized under the Pakistan Citizenship Act, 1951. Pakistani nationals can obtain German citizenship while retaining their Pakistani nationality, making dual status legal and permanent. The approval is based solely on Pakistan’s domestic laws, with no changes required under German legislation.
With this decision, Germany becomes the 21st country permitted for dual nationality with Pakistan. Other countries on the list include the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and several others, reflecting Pakistan’s expanding engagement with its global diaspora.
Senior officials from immigration and overseas employment authorities said the approval followed extensive legal review. They confirmed that Pakistani citizens acquiring German nationality will retain property ownership, inheritance rights, and full civil and legal rights in Pakistan, ensuring long-term legal and financial stability for overseas families.
Germany hosts an estimated Pakistani population of over 150,000, including professionals, students, entrepreneurs, and long-term residents. For years, many faced the difficult choice between career security in Germany and maintaining legal ties with Pakistan. The dual citizenship approval removes this barrier, enabling greater economic participation, investment confidence, and stronger connections between overseas Pakistanis and their home country.
